Along with fuel, the engine of your Cadillac Escalade consumes a lot of air, and before entering the combustion chamber, this air has to be cleaned and properly distributed among the cylinder ports. Each of them requires good airflow, and the intake manifold collects the incoming air and makes sure each cylinder receives a more or less equal volume of it. If the motor is not direct-injected, mixing air with fuel also begins in the manifold, right before the intake valves. Besides, depending on the engine model, this part serves as a base for a throttle body, carburetor, and fuel injectors.

In many engines, the manifold is also used as a source of partial vacuum for the brake booster, control emissions system, and some other parts. Particularly, the vacuum increases when the throttle choke is closed or slightly open, i.e. when you're not accelerating, and the ECU takes this opportunity to blow the EVAP charcoal canister or activate the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.
