The fuel tank of any modern vehicle including your Cadillac Escalade is not just a simple reservoir with a pump inside. In order to be safe and friendly to the environment, it's well-sealed and connected to the vehicle's emissions control system (EVAP). Even a usual gas cap has a built-in one-way valve which lets air only inside the tank, thus helping to avoid the excessive vacuum that may appear in the reservoir because of pump operation. As for the EVAP, it usually consists of a charcoal canister, vent valve, purge valve, and the tubes connecting the system with the air intake manifold and fuel tank.

Gasoline vapors inside the tank don't go outside but gradually collect inside the charcoal canister. In some modes of engine operation, the abovementioned valves get activated, and all those vapors are sucked into the manifold and then into the cylinders.
