A predecessor of the Buick Verano, the Skylark had a long lifespan during which it was available in many body styles and offered numerous power unit options. It was produced by General Motors during eight generations from 1953 till 1998. During 1953-1954, it was a two-door convertible with a traditional FR layout and a 5.3L Nailhead V8 engine. Starting from 1961, it had a choice of three transmissions, a two-speed automatic and a three/four-speed manual. In 1985, the layout was changed to front-mounted engine with front-wheel drive system and a two-speed automatic transmission was replaced by a three-speed THM 125, and a four-speed manual was retained. The last generation brought only automatic transmission options, three- and four-speed ones.
