The Buick Verano's ancestor, the Buick Skylark lived a long life being available in various body configurations and offering a great number of engines. General Motors manufactured this model in eight generations starting from 1953 and through 1998. During the first two years, the Skylark was a two-door convertible that used a 5.3L I8 power unit (Nailhead) and a usual FR layout. In 1961, the car got a range of three transmissions. They were a three-/four-speed manual and a two-speed automatic. In 1985, the FF layout took over and a three-speed THM 125 replaced a two-speed automatic gearbox, while a four-speed manual transmission was retained. The six-generation Skylark got a five-speed Isuzu manual transmission instead of a four-speed manual one. In the end of its lifespan, only three-/four-speed automatic gearboxes were available.
