Buick was intermittently applying the Century nameplate from 1936 up to 2005. Historically, the name originates from British verbalism “do the century”, which was commonly used in the 30s meaning “to reach 100 mph”. As the very first Century was designed as a high-performance vehicle intended to crack the 100 mph barrier, Buick executives decided that the name would match the new model supremely well. Later on, the Century name was applied to Buick performance cars up to 2005, when the last generation of the model was ceased in favor of the new LaCrosse. The Century was also sold under the Regal name in Japan, where the name Century is reserved by Toyota.
