Without the spark plugs, the engine of your Audi would be a wonderful but useless engineering masterpiece: they generate a spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders. Typically, spark plugs are mounted in the cylinder head. Most of them have two electrodes; the central one is wired to an ignition coil, while the side one is grounded. A ceramic layer provides adequate insulation and contributes to dispersing the heat generated during the combustion. Performance plugs feature an optimized design and more heat-resistant materials.

Spark plugs can be cold and hot, differing in heat exchange to maintain their optimal working temperature. Those belonging to the first type are more preferred when there is a need for strong performance at high revs. The ceramic isolator of the second type has less contact with metal, so they operate hotter, which is needed to reduce carbon deposits and increase their durability.
