Nowadays, most new vehicles come equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, or TPMS for short. There are two kinds of this system, the direct and indirect one, and each of them has its pros and cons. A direct TPMS has a pressure sensor in each wheel which is powered by a tiny inner battery and sends data to the ECU via a wireless connection. An indirect TPMS doesn't use pressure sensors and is considered more user-friendly; it detects low pressure in a more intelligent way relying on special software, ABS, wheel rotational speed, and some other factors.
