Tru-Time™ Adjustable Camshaft Gear by AEM Performance Electronics®. AEM Tru-Time Adjustable Cam Gears increase horsepower and torque without having to change the camshaft and are must-have items for engines that are milled, forced induction, high compression and/or utilizing aftermarket competition cams. Tru-Time cam gears enable users to match cam timing with their vehicle's tuning state by advancing or retarding the cam profile in one-degree increments via true laser-etched markings. Precision-cut gear teeth ensure no premature wearing of the cam gear's belt surface and AEM's anodizing on the adjustable cam gear's teeth is lab-test proven as the hardest anodizing process on the market.
If you want to make the most power, never just install a cam or set of cams and think that everything's fine because you lined up the timing marks. Due to manufacturing tolerances many stock and aftermarket camshafts are off a degree or two, and dialing in the cam timing to compensate for the deviation can result in horsepower gain. Furthermore, the savvy tuner knows that the powerband can be moved around and as much as 10-15 horsepower can be gained by advancing/retarding the cam timing. This is especially true on engines that have been modified with aftermarket camshafts, high compression, or forced induction like a turbocharger or supercharger.
To simplify cam timing changes AEM created Tru-Time Adjustable Cam Gears. CNC machined from heavy-duty 6061 T-6 billet aluminum, these gears allow the position of the hub to be changed in relation to the gear teeth, so you can advance/retard the cam timing +/-10 degrees. The timing markings are laser-etched on the leading edge of the gear for clear visibility. Once the desired position is attained the Grade-8 6-point bolts are tightened. The bolts feature integral washer flanges to distribute the load and endure repeated adjustments. Besides their adjustability, these gears are made to last. The gear teeth are precision cut to ensure the belt contact surface doesn't wear prematurely, and the surface is also hard anodized with the most durable anodizing process on the market.
An adjustable cam gear is also effective at restoring proper cam timing when heads have been milled. Milling the head on an overhead cam engine moves the head closer to the crankshaft, retarding the cam timing. The adjustable gear can accommodate this change and restore correct cam timing.
