Power steering fluid is the staple on which the operation of your Acura RDX’s power steering is based. As a hydraulic fluid, it’s used to deliver the energy from the pump to the rack, making it easier for you to direct your vehicle's wheels right or left. In addition to this main function, power steering fluid has an array of secondary ones. It lubricates and cools the power steering pump, protects metal surfaces from corrosion and traps all the debris resulting from wear or occasionally getting inside the system. But PS fluid cannot keep doing its job infinitely long as its chemicals gradually deteriorate and contaminants are accumulated.
Power steering fluid has to be changed regularly, although not as often as engine oil - look in your owner’s manual for the exact term. If you don’t do this service when it's recommended, you may end up with premature damage to power steering system components. Contaminated fluid can dramatically shorten the service life of the power steering pump, which will work much harder trying to force tiny chunks through the system. Eventually, the steering rack can get damaged as well, which is an utterly expensive component to replace.
