You apply the accelerator pedal every time you drive your car, and like any part that gets used repeatedly, eventually it will wear out. The pedal pad is usually the first to go, a casualty of the abrasive action of shoe sole on rubber, but the entire assembly can suffer from dirt, mud, snow, road salt, and whatever else you track in on your shoes. This harsh environment can result in wear to the pedal pivot mechanism, and may even cause electrical problems in electronic throttle control systems.

And speaking of linkage, at one time all cars and trucks came with a cable or mechanical linkage connecting the accelerator pedal with the carburetor or throttle body, but that changed several years ago with the advent of Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), also called Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) , and colloquially known as “drive-by-wire”.

ETC eliminates mechanical problems like sticking and binding linkage, and allows throttle operation to be integrated with traction and stability control systems to increase driver safety, but it’s not trouble-free. The system includes multiple Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensors mounted on the pedal assembly that signal pedal position to the Powertrain Control Module) PCM, and an electric motor on the throttle body that opens and closes the throttle blade in response to PCM commands. Like any electrical components the sensors can wear, and floor environment hazards can cause corroded wiring connectors. We offer individual sensors as well as complete pedal/sensor assemblies.
