A Panhard bar, also known as a track bar, is an important component of the suspension system, named after René Panhard who first introduced it during the early twentieth century. A Panhard bar function is quite intuitive: basically, it consists of a metal rod linking the chassis with the rear-end housing, limiting the lateral offset of the rear axle while allowing the up and down motion. A Panhard bar has proved to be more effective on large vehicles such as the Toyota 4Runner and is usually combined with other devices, trailing arms, that control the longitudinal offset of the axle.
