Racing Sway Bars

There is much that goes into making you faster and more stable in turns, with the right sway bar setup being one of the primary factors. These bars, otherwise known as stabilizer or anti-roll bars, connect the struts or control arms on the opposite sides of a vehicle to help limit body roll. When you pitch your car into a corner aggressively, too much lean on the inside means reduced tire grip and excessive oversteer. A sway bar is intended to counteract centrifugal forces, reducing the car’s roll angle in turns.

Stiffer sway bars are more efficient at decreasing the load difference between the inside and outside of a turning vehicle. However, that doesn’t mean that the stiffer this part, the better. Excessive stiffness in front affects the independence of each wheel, which means that the entire front axle can lose grip if you happen to hit a pothole. An overly stiff rear setup increases the risk of snap-oversteer. The balanced racing sway bar setup will improve handling precision through keeping your vehicle flatter in corners and reducing under- or over-steering tendencies.

Installing a thicker anti-roll bar means improved torsional rigidity, but stiffness also depends on the material used and the actual construction (solid or hollow). Adjustable sway bars provide a considerable improvement over the stock non-adjustable setup, allowing you to increase or reduce stiffness depending on the application. Adjustability comes in different forms, which include several attachment holes and length-adjustable links. Upgrading the sway bar(s) is a great way to improve handling, however, there are applications that require its removal or disconnection.
