Scheduled to go into production in 2013, the Porsche Macan was first announced as a development project in November 2010. It hadn't been until March 2011, when the new compact SUV was officially announced by Porsche. Back then the project was named the Cajun, as the model was to become a younger brother to the Cayenne or the "Cayenne junior.'' The working name was changed in February 2012, when the company announced that the sub-Cayenne SUV would be named the Macan. The name is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger, and as Porsche says, the car will thus be associated with the power, suppleness, and dynamics of a tiger. While its elder brother, the Cayenne, shares its platform with the Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7, the compact SUV shares its underpinnings with the Audi Q5. Using Audi's steering, Quattro drivetrain, chassis, and axles, the Porsche Macan is a rival to the BMW X3, Range Rover Evoque, and Mercedes GLK. Just like its relatives, the Cayenne and the Panamera, the new model will be produced in Leipzig, Germany, in a newly extended factory.
As for underhood, the upcoming Porsche will receive a selection of four- and six-cylinder diesel engines and the Audi Q5's hybrid powertrain, including a 2.0 TFSI engine making 208 hp and the electric motor with an output of 44 hp. Using Audi's parts, Porsche tuned engines for more power and sound. The base Macan will carry a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 220 hp, while the higher-trim models will feature a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 which produces about 300 hp. The engine portfolio will also include the Volkswagen’s supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 with an output of 350 hp. The model will surely feature a lot of parts from the Porsche bin, including the Sport Chrono pack, advanced brakes with a carbon ceramic option, and a sport exhaust system.
Versus Audi Q5, the SUV will be available as both two- and four-door variants. The four-door model is expected to arrive first, while the two-door Macan is to arrive a year later. Being lower, wider, and shorter than the Q5, the Macan has flared wheel arches, wider track, and very large wheels. As for the interior, there are unique seats and a cockpit which speak of sports-car-like driving dynamics. The Macan is actually taking over the interior styling of the Panamera and the Cayenne, which is the wide central backbone of knobs and buttons and the instrument cluster reminiscent found in two-door sports cars by Porsche. Featuring such Porsche characteristics, as lightness, agility, and brightness, the Macan will have a positive impact.
It's all about extra practicality combined with comfort. Designed for those Porsche fans, who are interested in something more crossover like, the Macan is fun to drive. As a worthy competitor on the road, the Macan now possesses more convenience and efficiency. The attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the Macan is aimed at younger customers. Enhanced with the proper accessories, the Macan puts the entire field to shame. The potential drivers of the Macan just can't miss the little extra practicality it offers.
