Honda CR-V Camshafts

In every automotive piston engine, the parameters of the valvetrain system greatly influence the overall performance. A crucial part of the valvetrain is a camshaft; depending on the engine architecture, there can be one or several cams installed in the cylinder head or engine block. The angle and shape of cam lobes define the moment and duration of valve opening. Many decades ago, engineers first noticed that engine performance may increase when these parameters differ at high and low RPMs. Naturally, the same lobes can't physically change their shape or location, but in the 1980s, Honda introduced the solution producing a similar effect – a variable valve timing system (VTEC).

One of its numerous variations is likely to be installed in your Honda CR-V. Unlike similar systems used by most rivals, which just alter the cam phasing (i.e. the duration of opening), Honda offered a more interesting solution – two sets of lobes for each valve for changing its lift. In 2006, the company implemented an even more advanced system known as the AVTEC with a single lobe but two rocker arms per each valve.
