In 2005 the French car manufacturing company Citroen unveiled the Citroen C6, a model that entered mid-luxury segment of the company lineup. It rose from the C6 Lignage concept that appeared first in 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show, and differed from the original styling in very slight parts and details. Though it was planned that C6 sales would start in 2001 year as a XM model replacement, it leaved the assembly line only in 2005. The C6 was equipped with a 3.0L V6 engine delivering 208 horsepower and an optional 2.7L V6 HDi diesel capable of producing 201 horsepower.

The intermediate Citroen C6 specification Lignage was discontinued in October 2008, later the same happened to the manual transmission. Polar white color appeared as a substitution for Deep Red, and standard navigation system 'NavDrive' was replaced with 'Concert Park'. The 2.2L and 2.7L HDi engines, powered by 6-speed automatic transmission, were offered in base C6 and Executive trims from the beginning of 2009. Other optional Citroen C6 parts were sunroof, wi-fi and 3G connectivity, and Lounge Pack. Later in 2009 the 2.7L option was replaced with 3.0 V6 engine.

The innovative safety solutions, such as bonnet slightly popping up if a person or an animal is hit, allowed the C6 to get 4 stars in the EuroNCAP pedestrian crush-test. 2009 the same EuroNCAP awarded the C6 with the Europe's Safest Car title.
