About Audi 4000

The Audi 4000 is a rebadged version of the Audi 80 adapted for the US market. The Audi 80 was sold as the Audi Fox for model years 1973–1979, and as the Audi 4000 for model years 1980–1987 in North America. The early Audi 4000 models were very similar to the Audi 80, with the addition of crash safety bumpers and quad sealed beam headlights. The first model was powered by a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine with a 4-speed manual transmission. It was available in four and two door versions. In 1981, a two-door model got a 2.1L five-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission and was sold as the Audi 4000 5+5. The 5-speed models offered the 4+E badge that means standard four speeds plus an economy gear. Later, the automatic transmission was additionally available for the 5-speed model.

In the USA, the Audi 4000 was sold in 4000S (1.8L) and 4000CS quattro (2.2L) versions. In 1982, the automaker returned to the 4-cylinder version and added diesel and turbo-diesel models. Further in 1984, the 4-cylinder engine was increased to 1.8L. Later, the 4000S quattro, a powerful all-wheel drive version with a 5-cylinder engine, was introduced to the US market. The 1985 model had an excellent corrosion protection thanks to 27-step anti-corrosion paint process and extensive use of galvanized panels. All 1985 models were completely restyled. Front grille, lights, bumpers, trunk, and interior received a new design. The 4000CS debuted in 1986 and came with the standard 5-speed manual transmission. It was a special model produced in honor of the 100th anniversary of the automobile. Also, the 4000CS quattro version was released which got a CIS-E fuel-injected 2.2L I5 gasoline engine with electronic ignition.

The 1986 CS model featured a host of amenities and technology innovations at the time such as trim information computer, heated front seats, power sunroof, etc. The CS quattro received a luxury leather interior. The 1987 model year was the last for 4000s. The 4000 was replaced with a slightly larger 80/90 series in 1988. This reliable vehicle became Audi’s most popular model in America. Its compact size, maneuverability, and superior all-season performance made it a real favorite among the most picky drivers and automotive press.
