The soft roof made of durable, sound-absorbing fabric can be raised in 15 seconds when the vehicle moves no faster than 30 mph. The trunk can be used even when the roof is down. Once the top is retracted, the cargo capacity reduces to 12 cubic feet. It can be expanded slightly with the rear seats folded.

The convertible version of the 2020 BMW 8-Series features the same sporty style and borrows many visual cues from the coupe but has a unique trunk lid, redesigned active kidney grille with movable air flaps that can reduce drag at high speeds, and chrome trim. It comes with a longer wheelbase and bigger body while being able to accommodate five passengers. No matter the number of people inside, the newly-introduced car surrounds them all with luxury courtesy of premium leather in multiple tone options, ambient lighting, and the latest infotainment. These high-performance twins up the horsepower count of the already capable 8 Series to 600 hp (617 hp in the M8 Competition). A 0-60 mph time comes in 3 seconds flat for the Competition model and 3.1 seconds for the coupe, while the top speed is 189 mph. To make full use of the grunt, there is an 8-speed automatic transmission linked to GPS, Active M rear diff, and electromagnetic dampers. The BMW M8 Competition Individual Manufaktur edition adds visual spice to these cars, but all 20 examples are reserved for the Canadian market. Along with exclusive black and red body colors and a Merino leather interior, the limited-edition models get a bunch of carbon fiber parts. What the U.S. gets is the BMW M8 Gran Coupe First Edition. Only 400 cars will see the light of the day, painted in a striking Diamant Green shade matched with Gold Bronze trim and accessories. It also boasts unique wheel designs and a Merino leather interior loaded with the latest tech.
