The GLE-Class by Mercedes underwent a complete redesign for 2019 and now offers thoroughly improved mechanicals, technology and styling. The vehicle utilizes the corporate MHA platform sharing it with the larger GLS-Class, even though the latter features three rows of seats and the GLE-Class comes with two rows. The 2019 Mercedes GLE-Class employs a range of engines with the base unit being a 3.0 L twin-turbo I6 that works together with a 21-hp electric motor. The system delivers the combined power output of 362 hp. The AMG 53 variant comes with the same powertrain setup, though it is more potent, capable of making 429 hp. The range-topping engine is a 4.0 L twin-turbo V8 that can deliver either 571 hp or 612 hp. All engines work together with a 9-speed automatic; both RWD and AWD layouts are offered. A plug-in version of the model will join the lineup some time later. It comes with a 2.0 L gasoline I4 under the hood teamed with a 90-kW electric motor that produce 279 hp together.

The 2019 Mercedes GLE-Class was made less boxy and more rounded compared to the preceding generation. This way, the vehicle looks smaller now, even though it is actually a bit bigger and offers more room for rear occupants. The headlights are more rounded and the rear end of the regular (non-AMG) version comes with the hatch featuring a steeper rake. The front fascia is a bit lower to emphasize the width of the vehicle. The base variant features the new grille with horizontal slats, while AMG versions come with a Panamericana grille to visually denote the enhanced performance they deliver. New design cues of the 2019 GLE-Class are combined with more traditional rugged cues inspired by the G-Class, such as bold wheel arches. The interior of the vehicle offers lots of LED lights and a large dual digital display. A digital instrument cluster flows into a similarly sized infotainment screen, creating the look of a single span of glass. A steering wheel was redesigned and now features a touchpad and there are 4 new rectangular air vents placed under the screens.
