Formerly known as the Scion FR-S, the Toyota 86 enters the 2018 model year offering a new GT version that provides improved comfort and comes with better equipment. Considered to be a replacement to the 860 Special Edition variant launched in late 2017, the new 86 GT is a regular trim, while the 860 was manufactured in only 860 units. Outside, the newly-launched car comes with LED fog lights, underbody aerodynamic panel and body-colored accents. There is a special GT Black variant that also features Raven Black-finished side mirror caps and rear wing spoiler. The seats also offer heating, while a steering wheel also features silver stitching and audio controls. The 2018 Toyota 86 takes its power from a 2.0 L aluminum flat-4 that generates over 200 hp. The actual power output varies depending on the transmission – with a 6-speed manual, it tops out at 205 hp and with a 6-speed automatic, the power plant delivers 200 hp. The engine uses the corporate injection system that combines port and direct injection technologies. The latter provides a cooling effect in cylinders, enabling the power plant to use a high compression ratio of 12.5:1, while port injectors improve combustion efficiency under light and medium loads. Besides, the engine delivers superior fuel economy – up to 32 mpg with an automatic and up to 28 mpg with a manual.

The 2018 Toyota 86 is one of the lightest sports cars on the market, weighing only 2,758 lb. In addition, it has a low drag coefficient of 0.29 and ultra-low center of gravity. The chassis was developed specifically for the vehicle and features MacPherson struts in front and double-wishbone setup in the rear. The steering system was tuned to deliver superior feedback and a turning circle is only 36.1 ft. The base version of the new Toyota 86 comes with automatic LED headlights, 17” alloy wheels, cruise control, Bluetooth, voice commands, rear-view camera, 7” touchscreen, and 8-speaker audio system.
