The Tundra is Toyota’s biggest and most powerful pickup truck. In its segment, the Toyota Tundra faces fierce competition from offerings by the Big Three. Yet it has a serious advantage that has already earned it a considerable following - an impressive reliability rating proven by Toyota’s reputation for building million-mile trucks. Designed and manufactured in the U.S., the 2017 Toyota Tundra keeps being a hard-working pickup backed by the automaker’s reliability record. The truck was given a refresh for 2014, so the 2017 Tundra is majorly a carryover from the previous model year. There are slight changes for 2017 that include new color choices, a standard tow hitch across the lineup, and standard front power seats on the Limited trim level.
For the 2015 model year, the Tundra dropped the base V6 engine. The 2017 Toyota Tundra keeps offering an all-V8 lineup. The base one is a 4.6-liter eight-cylinder that develops 310 hp and 327 lb-ft, fitted to the SR and SR5 trim grades. The second and last option is a 5.7-liter V8 good for 381 hp and 401 lb-ft, which is standard on the upper-level Limited, off-road capable TRD Pro, range-topping Platinum, and special 1794 Edition, while being offered as an option on every other Tundra model. Backing both engines is a sole 6-speed automatic. The 2017 Toyota Tundra is a decent tow vehicle that can pull up to 10,500 pounds if properly equipped. New for 2015 was a TRD Pro model made to play in the mud with confidence. Despite lacking a locking rear diff, it has proven to be a capable 4x4 off-roader that can tackle all kinds of steep grades, streambeds, and demanding trails.
The interior of the 2017 Toyota Tundra is spacious, especially that of the CrewMax model. The amount of legroom it offers is among the biggest in crew cabs. Just like any other full-size half-ton truck, the 2017 Tundra offers an array of interior options that range from a basic design to those turning it into a luxurious hauler. The equipment you’ll find in the base SR model include a rearwiew camera, infotainment system operated via a 6.1-inch touchscreen, power windows and locks, USB ports and auxiliary inputs, Bluetooth, and 4-way adjustable front seats. Toyota claims to be the first manufacturer to offer blind-spot monitoring on a full-size truck, a technology usually associated with cars.
The Toyota Tundra is a capacious and practical truck with an outstanding resale value. Its dependability is legendary, which is the main reason many truck shoppers consider it a good alternative to any of the Big Three full-size pickups. Whether you own a base SR or a luxurious Platinum, you may want to add some features to make a styling statement or improve your truck’s functionality or capability.
