It employs innovative carbon core technology and high-grade tensile steel as well as lightweight aluminum, which translates in almost 300-pound weight reduction compared to the outgoing model. The 7-Series also gets an air suspension that adapts to any road conditions in a split second. Additionally, there is a range of edgy technology, both new and inherited from the previous generation, including but not limited to night vision, gesture control, active steering, head-up display, and automated parking.

The 2016 BMW 7-Series is available in two trim levels, the 740i and 750i. Under the hood of the rear-wheel-drive 740i model there is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo engine good for 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic. The 750i gets power from a turbocharged 4.4-liter 445-horsepower V8. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Fuel economy is estimated at 24 mpg combined for the base model and 19 mpg combined for the 750i.
