Suzuki released its first Suzuki-branded 4WD vehicle in Japan in 1970 with the LJ10 (Light Jeep 10) badge. The LJ20, LJ50, and LJ80 emerged throughout the 1970s, and the last was also known as the Jimny. When the Jimny 1300 was updated in 1985, it was released in the U.S. under the name Samurai. Narrow and Jeep-like, the Samurai originally had a 1.3 liter 4-cylinder engine and 63 hp. A 1988 Consumer Reports review found the vehicle rolled over easily at high speeds, and its reputation was permanently damaged. Suzuki pulled the vehicle from the American market in 1995. The affordable price and light weight continue to make it a strong-selling off-road vehicle elsewhere.
