The idler arm attaches to the frame on the side of the vehicle opposite the steering gear, and supports the center link, keeping it level. A worn idler arm will typically exhibit up and down play and cause the toe setting to vary with concurrent shimmy and looseness in the steering. Hello! For your 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis - there is 1 idler arm and 1 pitman arm. The idler arm in your vehicle connects to the 2 bolt bracket that connects to the frame and the pitman arm connects to the steering box.
