A transmission oil cooler is a liquid-to-air heat exchanger similar to a radiator or A/C condenser. A system of tubes carrying the liquid (transmission fluid) is attached to thin metal plates called fins. The heat from the fluid is transferred to the fins where it can be removed by air passing through the cooler. Internal tube clogging, dents in the tubes, or anything that impedes the flow of fluid through the cooler, and bent fins or debris stuck in the fins, or anything that impedes airflow through the cooler, can reduce effective heat transfer and cause the fluid to overheat. Overheated transmission fluid can oxidize and lose its lubricating ability, turn to varnish and clog small transmission passages.
