The Ford Tempo and its sibling, the Mercury Topaz, are compact autos which were produced by Ford beginning in 1984 to 1994. The vehicles were scaled down successors to the somewhat boxy Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr cars. The Tempo and Topaz were a part of a plan by Ford to rejuvenate its vehicle lineup and to market more environmentally friendly, modern designed, and fuel efficient autos, in order to compete with various European and Japanese imports of that time. The Tempo and Topaz autos were replaced in 1995 with the newly-introduced "global car platform" Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique.
