Multiple carburetor intake manifolds first appeared in numbers on V8 engines in the 1950s. The carburetors of the day were small, and installing multiple carburetors in Tripower (3 two-barrels) or Dual-Quad (2 four-barrels) configurations was a way to increase air and fuel flow into the cylinders and make more power. Gradually, as carburetor and intake manifold technology improved, newer single four-barrel carburetors and intake manifolds surpassed multi-carb setups and they were discontinued by vehicle manufacturers.
