The crankshaft rotates on plain bearings. This design requires a constant supply of pressurized lubricating oil during engine operation to prevent damage to the shaft or bearings and ensure minimal friction. Crankshaft seals prevent oil from leaking past the rotating shaft. Over time crankshaft seals wear out resulting in oil leakage.
