In the old days the predominant batteries were 6V and 12V flooded lead acid batteries that were primarily used to start the vehicle. Today however, you may need to test flooded batteries as well as AGM, Gel Cell, and SLA, deep cycle type batteries. In the past you may have needed different testers to match each battery’s testing requirements, but with the Auto Meter RC-300 hand-held battery tester, you can test all these batteries, even discharged batteries, quickly and easily, with accurate results.

SLA batteries are commonly used as backup batteries and to power mobility chairs, golf carts, etc. These batteries are rated in Amp Hours and categorized as deep cycle batteries. Testing these batteries requires a specialized testing protocol and the RC-300 is ideal for the job. It will test SLA batteries from 4AH to 50 AH. The innovative database function of this tester allows for highly accurate custom testing of individual battery types.

The RC-300 employs Auto Meter’s patented Digital Pulse Load (DPL) technology, which is the fastest, easiest, and most accurate testing for batteries available. DPL technology was developed using the Battery Council International (BCI) endorsed variable load and hydrometer testing protocols, to digitally monitor voltage drop and recovery, or ripple. The ripple is amplified by the tester and utilized as the diagnostic tool. The smaller the ripple detected, the higher the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) capability of the battery. Following the pulse load, a full load is applied to the battery, and a sophisticated algorithm then converts the input information of battery rating and temperature with the ripple response to determine battery performance.

But don’t think this tester’s sophistication makes it hard to use. Easy to follow testing instructions and results are displayed on a large 64 character, 4 line LCD screen, and navigation is easy with the keys located below the screen. Each key even “beeps” when pressed, to let you know contact has been made. The tester stores the last 50 tests in its memory for easy reviewing, and information can be displayed on a PC when the tester is connected with the optional cable. Test results can be printed out via the PC or using the tester’s built-in infrared capabilities and the optional wireless infrared printer. The RC-300’s internals are housed in a tough, plastic case with a removable, easy-grip rubber boot. The tester connects to the battery with the included 30” 16-gauge leads, and it has reverse polarity protection.

Comprehensive, illustrated user instructions are included with the RC-300 Battery Tester, and it’s backed by a limited 1-year warranty.
