The Audi 5000 is the U.S. name for the second and third generations of the 100, the C2 and the C3 respectively, manufactured from 1978 to 1988. The C2 was presented in 1976, featuring a classic, elegant and linear body shape. It came as a 4-door sedan, 5-door hatchback and, starting in 1977, as a 2-door sedan. The Audi 5000 was praised for smooth handling, high performance, and safety. The third generation was launched in 1991, featuring a more aerodynamic and flowing body and a new safety system known as pro-coon. A station wagon body style was available in the C3 series, while a 2-door sedan was discontinued.
