With growing requirements for minimizing harmful emissions, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system plays an increasingly important role. First introduced back in the early 1970s, EGR helps to lower NOx emissions thanks to mixing a certain quantity of exhaust gas with the air coming into the intake manifold. The EGR valve is a device that controls the fumes getting into the intake. The early systems were pneumatic and relied on the vacuum in the manifold, so when the throttle of such a vehicle is widely open and vacuum is reduced, the valves remains closed and enables the vehicle to develop more power.

More modern EGR systems are controlled by electronics and feature higher accuracy.
