The vapor canister of your Honda CR-V is an important part of the evaporative emission control (EVAP) system that helps to minimize harmful emissions produced by evaporating fuel. Depending on its temperature, the gasoline found inside the tank expands or contracts in volume while gradually evaporating. In order to work properly and maintain optimal inner pressure, the fuel tank has a ventilation system, and the vapor canister serves as a place where gasoline vapors can be stored for a while without polluting the ambient air. For this purpose, the canister is filled with activated charcoal.

In order to release the vapors and use them during the combustion process, the canister is connected to the intake manifold through a purge valve. Typically, it's a solenoid that opens when the vehicle is moving at regular speed; at idle, it's normally closed.
