Honda CR-V Differentials

Like many other compact crossover SUVs, the Honda CR-V is available with an optional AWD system in which the front differential is integrated into the gearbox, while the rear one gets activated automatically in certain conditions. The rear differential receives engine torque through the driveshaft going along the body and connecting to the diff through the multi-plate clutch system. Older models have the AWD system with two hydraulic pumps driven by the front and rear axles, respectively, and creating pressure to activate this clutch mechanism only when there is a difference in rotational motion between the axles.

However, the newer CR-Vs launched after 2012 feature a single hydraulic pump to engage the rear axle; this pump is controlled by electronics and provides faster reaction in slippery conditions, or when you need to accelerate from a standstill fast. However, the diffs themselves in both setups are actually non-locking. The front one is lubed by the same transmission fluid as other parts of the gearbox, while the rear one requires individual fluid change once in a while, according to a special schedule.
