A mass airflow sensor is one of the most crucial air intake parts. Its working principle is based on two thin wires one of which is made from platinum and is able to change its electrical resistance depending on the flow of incoming air. Given this resistance, the electronic board found inside the MAF sensor generates the series of impulses that come to the ECU to let it know how much air gets into the cylinders at any given moment. Over time, the sensing wires get covered with dirt that passes the air filter or comes from the crankcase ventilation or EGR system connected to the intake manifold.

As a result, this dirt affects resistance, and the readings of the MAF sensor installed in your GMC Yukon may become inaccurate. In some cases, the sensor's performance and accuracy can be restored by carefully cleaning it with a thin brush or special aerosol meant for cleaning such sensors (carb cleaners can be too chemically aggressive). In other cases, the wires or inner electronics turn out to be seriously damaged, and only replacement can help.
