A descendent of another American SUV favorite, the Jimmy, the GMC Yukon has been a mainstay in the world of full-size vehicles for almost 20 years. Originally based on the GMT400 platform, the first-generation GMC Yukon utilized a truck chassis, and in 1994, it switched from being offered strictly as a 2-door to adding a 4-door model to the roster. Consequently, the 4-door Yukon weighed in about a half-ton more than the 2-door model. A 5.7L small-block V8 was the standard engine included but a 6.5L turbocharged V8 became available in 1994, as well. In 2000, the Yukon and the Tahoe (both are closely related) were redesigned and moved to the GMT800 platform, at the time the most recent platform for GM's full-size trucks. Smaller yet more powerful engines were introduced to replace the standard 5.7L from the first series, including a 5.3L Vortec V8 capable of topping out at 285 horsepower.
The second-generation Yukon also offered an automatic transmission only and showcased some exterior changes, as well. The outline of the body was now more aerodynamically friendly and the grille was improved for a bolder image. Inside the Yukon, upgraded seats, improved door panels, and a new dash were introduced. When 2003 arrived, the Yukon began to take on even more changes. StabiliTrak, GM's stability control system, arrived. Other amenities such as satellite radio and a DVD entertainment system were also offered. In 2004, the engine options and the under-hood GMC Yukon parts were updated, with GMC leaning on smaller yet more efficient motors. A 4.8L Vortec was introduced that displayed the same horsepower as the original 5.3L (285). A new 5.3L Vortec became available and was rated for 295 HP.
Redesigned for the GMT900 platform, the third-generation GMC Yukon debuted in 2007. The front of the exterior featured a substantial number of changes. A smoother, curvier hood, new fascia, and larger grille highlight the restyling cues. New seats, real wood trim on the dash, chrome accents, and improved door panels make up the notable updates for the interior. Thanks to Active Fuel Management, highway fuel mileage improved to 19 mpg. Active Fuel Management shuts down half the cylinders on the engine in order to conserve fuel during periods of light driving. The engines were upgraded with the performance-oriented GMC Yukon parts. The base engine is still the 4.8L Vortec V8, only it is now capable of 10 more horsepower (295) compared to the previous generation, and a 5.3L V8 (320 horsepower) came standard on all 4-wheel drive versions of the Yukon. Sales expectations have been exceeded by the latest edition of the Yukon, despite the economic turbulence within the automotive industry. From 2000 to 2008, the GMC Yukon has sold on average 236,561 units per year, easily placing it among the elite in its class in terms of overall popularity.

The GMC Yukon Gets 2011 AutoPacific VSA
AutoPacific, an automotive marketing and consulting company based in Southern California, announced today its 15th annual Vehicle Satisfaction Award. Unlike other automotive awards that concentrate mainly on quality and reliability, the AutoPacific VSA is all about owners' satisfaction with their vehicles. After all, who can evaluate vehicles better than the owners themselves? The study is based on the survey of 68,000 respondents that rated 48 attributes for importance in purchase decision and satisfaction after the purchase. This year's award will help the consumers sort through 262 vehicle nameplates available in the USA today.
The GMC Yukon was given VSA in the Large Sport Utility Vehicle category, confirming awards that the SUV got earlier, including the ConsumerGuide's Best Buy Award earned in 2010. In 2011 the Yukon was also awarded IntelliChoice’s Best Overall Value of the Year. The award was given based on such ownership costs as repairs, maintenance, fees, fuel, and insurance. This year, automotive critics appreciate the GMC Yukon as well. Thus the Truck Trend magazine named it Best in Class 2011 Full-Size SUV, praising up-to-nine-passenger seating, 8,200-pound towing capacity, and fuel efficiency of the Yukon.

GMC Yukon Scoops Title of 2011 Best Overall Value
GMC Yukon took top honors in the full-size SUV category of IntelliChoice’s 2011 Best Overall Values of the Year (BOVY) awards. The best car values of 2011 were announced at the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) convention in San Fransisco. The Yukon is one of 21 BOVY segment winners this year.
IntelliChoice, the leading market analyst of ownership cost and car value, has recognized the Yukon as the full-size SUV with the best total ownership costs, including maintenance, repairs, fuel, fees, depreciation, financing and insurance.
Earning the “Best Overall Value” title this year, GMC Yukon has confirmed the status of the "best buy" given to it by Consumer Guide last year.
“Today’s consumers are looking for vehicles that will provide the best value for their money, which is what we strive to accomplish with GMC vehicles. This award proves that we are achieving our goal,” said Brian Sweeney, general manager of Buick GMC.

2011 GMC Yukon Hybrid Delivers Greater City Fuel Economy
Fuel economy is one of the key factors to consider when buying a car. Pioneer in its class, the GMC Yukon Hybrid delivers 33 percent greater city fuel economy compared to the models with the traditional engine. An estimated 20 mpg in the city with full-size SUV capability is what the 2011 Yukon Hybrid and Yukon Denali Hybrid can boast. Electric drive is enabled up to 30 mph, saving fuel when towing a trailer. In fact, this giant comes with better city fuel efficiency that a standard 6-cylinder Camry or Accord.
Upgrades in the Yukon Hybrid lineup are evidence of GM’s commitment to the segment. The company reportedly plans to introduce a more efficient second generation of 2-mode hybrid trucks in 2013, and a plug-in version prior to that. They have also announced a $300 million dollar investment to build an electric motor plant to supply those components as well.
“We’re committed to hybrid technology in our fullsize pickups and SUVs,” spokesman Brian Corbett told Ward’s Auto. “We’re not wavering.”
