The performance and fuel economy of your Chevy Colorado greatly depend on how effectively the engine burns hydrocarbons. In its turn, this efficiency depends on the right air-to-fuel ratio (AFR). This parameter varies in different working modes – the motor runs leaner when the truck is not seriously loaded, and the mixture gets richer when you're accelerating. While the injectors are calibrated to supply fuel with maximum accuracy, the air getting into the combustion chamber needs to be measured, and a mass air flow (MAF) sensor is a high-precision device responsible just for that.
In order to cope with this task, modern MAF sensors use platinum, which can change its electrical resistance depending on the temperature. The air passes through two platinum sensing wires one of which is heated by electric current, and both of them are cooled by constantly changing airflow. The difference in current is measured by electronics, and it's considered proportional to the mass of air. The wires are very vulnerable, and in order to last long, they have to work in clean air. Their contamination and damages caused by foreign objects, alongside the sensor's malfunctioning circuit board are some of the most common reasons for a faulty sensor.
