The power steering pump and fluid reservoir may be one unit or the fluid reservoir may be separate and connect to the pump with a hose. Leaks are an obvious cause for pump replacement. A power steering leak can make a mess of the engine bay, and if not repaired can result in loss of power assist. Power steering fluid can also become flammable when sprayed under pressure onto a hot exhaust manifold. A lack of power assist may not necessarily mean the pump is at fault.
