The Volkswagen Type 181 was originally developed for the West German Army, and was sold under various names on different markets. In the United States this model was known as the Volkswagen Thing (1973–74). The German government needed a reliable vehicle that was lightweight, nimble, and quite cheap. The Thing proved to be a very capable vehicle, appropriate for both military and civil use. The car had great off-road capabilities and could be driven on rough terrain. The Thing demonstrated a simple design. It was borrowed from its predecessor the Kübelwagen, which name is literally translated as «bucket car». The vehicle had four removable doors, and a convertible hard top available as an option. This top allows the Thing to transform from a car into a pickup truck.
