If you drive an SUV or Jeep with a tailgate mounted spare tire carrier, or a pickup truck with the spare carrier under the bed, and you upgrade to oversize tires, we offer mounting solutions that will allow you to carry a matching spare. But what if your spare is mounted inside the vehicle? Well, if you have a roof rack or a roof rack mounted cargo basket, you don’t have to find space inside your rig for a big, bulky tire, just carry that wheel and tire assembly up on the roof with one of our roof mounted spare tire carriers.
Your roof rack or cargo basket is a great alternative location for mounting a spare tire, one that will free up room inside your vehicle for other cargo, and also allow you to carry a larger spare that will match oversize tires. But a big, heavy wheel/tire assembly carried up high has to be securely mounted, for it were to come loose it could turn into a dangerous projectile. The brands we offer have extensive cargo carrying and off-road experience and expertise, and they know how to make products that will haul gear safely, especially when the going gets rough over rugged terrain. So, no matter which of our carriers you choose, you can count on a secure attachment for your spare tire.
We offer a variety of roof mounted spare tire carriers, everything from simple J-hooks, to carriers that include a platform to support the tire, to cargo basket mounted carriers for specific wheel lug patterns. The J-hook is our most affordable mount and may be the easiest to install – just rest the spare on the roof rack crossbars, engage one of the crossbars with the J-hook while pushing the threaded end through the wheel’s lug stud hole, then tighten the included nut to secure the wheel. Platform carriers for roof racks are adjustable to provide proper support for a range of tire sizes. While some carriers secure the wheel through one or more wheel stud holes, others attach through the center wheel opening.
Our roof mounted spare tire carriers are available in versions designed for the brand’s particular crossbars or cargo basket as well as universal carriers that can be used on any roof rack or basket setup. Some carriers are lockable to prevent theft of your spare. Although roof mounted carriers are a beneficial alternative for vehicles that have an OE interior spare mount, because they get the spare out of the way they can also be a practical alternative for pickup trucks and vehicles with OE tailgate mounts. A spare that’s on the roof isn’t taking up valuable cargo space in a truck bed, and it won’t overstress tailgate hinges or restrict your choice of rear bumper on SUVs and Jeeps.
A taller and wider wheel/tire combo probably won’t fit in the factory spare mounting location, but don’t be tempted to run the puny OE spare. A matching spare can be included in the tire rotation pattern, for overall longer tire life, and if you venture off-road with a small spare and get a flat, problems can occur when different diameter tires are mounted on an axle with a locking differential. With a full size spare you can change that flat tire and continue off-roading instead of having to limp home on a scrawny spare.
