Racing Spark Plugs, Wires & Components

A big race starts with a little spark. The spark generated by spark plugs. Transmitting the electric signal from the ignition system to the combustion chamber, spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders, thus starting the engine. Properly operating racing spark plugs provide efficient engine performance and help racers make the most of their car. What is more, they are meant to resist extreme temperatures in racing engines (840 – 1600F). Looking to unlock the hidden power inside your engine? We are here to provide you with top-grade spark plugs, wiring, and more from the most trustworthy manufacturers in the industry.

A spark plug consists of a shell, ceramic insulator, and electrodes. While the side electrode is connected to the shell, the center one is secured inside the ceramic casing. Depending on the material electrode ends are made from, there are several spark plug types such as copper, platinum, and iridium. Copper-tipped spark plugs are the most affordable ones in the industry, however, they need to be regularly replaced, after 20,000-50,000 miles. Their electrode has the largest diameter, thus they require more voltage to create the spark. When it comes to spark plugs made from precious metals like platinum and iridium, they are the preferred choice of racers because of their longer lifespan and lower operating temperatures.

Platinum spark plugs last much longer than copper ones, up to 100,000 miles, but they may overheat in certain conditions. These plugs run hotter than copper-tipped, which in its turn helps prevent debris buildup. If you have a new car with an electronic distributor ignition system, platinum-tipped spark plugs are what you need. As for iridium plugs, they are the most durable and longest lasting plugs, which is why they cost much more than copper or platinum ones. Efficiently conducting the electricity, iridium spark plugs deliver more power to the motor, thus improving its performance. They work best for cars with a coil-on-plug ignition system.
