Racing Alternators & Components

An alternator is a kind of automotive equipment that doesn’t affect a vehicle’s performance, however, it is crucial for proper operation of all electrical systems and devices in the vehicle. When it comes to a race car, this is especially important since it is usually packed with a unique combination of equipment and accessories. Needless to say that altogether these devices consume lots of power that a standard alternator cannot cover. While most factory alternators are rated at 65 to 100 amps, high-performance or racing alternators are usually much more powerful and can handle lots of additional amperage draw.

A racing alternator is a compact yet powerful generator that converts mechanical energy into electricity. It consists of four main components, including a rotor, stator, diode rectifier, and voltage regulator. When the alternator belt or serpentine belt spins the pulley that is rested on the same shaft as the rotor, this causes the latter to rotate very quickly inside the alternator. Since the rotor, which is a big magnet by itself, is placed inside a nest of copper wires, named a stator, its spinning generates AC current in accordance with the theory of electromagnetism. Then, the electricity is conducted to the diode that turns AC into DC, which voltage is kept within a specific range by means of the voltage regulator.

When shopping for a racing alternator for your vehicle, the first thing you should consider is its amperage. It must be the sum of your current draw and the load of all future electrical devices and accessories you plan to add or install. Besides, it is always a good idea to choose a racing alternator with the amperage rate that exceeds your current and future needs. This will prevent you from unexpected expenses and save you a lot of headache if you make a decision to install an unplanned electrical device in the future. At the same time, you should not worry about having a too powerful alternator as it can damage none of your electrical systems and devices.
