When the 356 was dropped in 1965, Porsche introduced the 912 as a very appealing alternative to a more expensive 911: the two models looked very similar in their body shapes and in the styling details, but the 912 had less standard features than its sibling and was equipped with a different engine. Curiously, the 100,000th Porsche was the 912 Targa developed for the German autobahn police. Even though the 912 had proved successful, the production was discontinued in 1969, due to internal logistic reasons and the new U.S. emissions regulation. However, a new version of the 912 was released in North America in 1976 replacing the Porsche 914, and was discontinued again when the 924 was launched on the market.
