IIHS reports Armada Is the Safest SUV

According to the latest report, issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Nissan Armada is one of 15 safest SUVs. The winner list also includes Ford Edge, Honda CR-V, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Acura MDX and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

The above mentioned vehicles share one common feature and it is Electronic Stability Control. The IIHS considers that driver death rates have become lower due to this system. “The rollover risk in SUVs used to outweigh their size/weight advantage, but that’s no longer the case, thanks to ESC,” said Anne McCartt, the Institute’s senior vice president.

Besides the safest vehicle list, the independent, scientific organization also released a list of autos with the highest rates of driver death. Nissan Titan crew and extended cab, Nissan Versa and Nissan Frontier crew cab are among the losers. These models share a failure with the other vehicles, made by Kia, Chevy, Mazda and Subaru.

Among all vehicles the SUVs and minivans have the lowest driver fatality rate. However, the owners of the smaller cars are not so lucky. The report states these cars are among those with the highest driver death rates.
