A power steering system makes it virtually effortless to turn the steering wheel, and this is achieved through the use of hydraulic fluid that transfers energy, lubricates moving parts, and prevents corrosion. Changing it isn’t typically listed as a maintenance procedure that should be performed at regular intervals, but it is definitely what is worth doing to maintain the system’s long-lasting reliability. If your Honda CR-V manual doesn’t state otherwise, a general rule is to periodically check the level of power steering fluid and possibly replace it when it gets too dark.
If turning the steering wheel is harder than usual or becomes noisy, this could mean the fluid is low due to a leak. Seals and gaskets may break down over time, and the resulting leakage may cause damage to some components, especially the pump. The fluid level is easy to check – it is contained in a see-through reservoir under the hood, which has marks on it indicating the proper amount of fluid.
