Every trailer has an upper limit where weight is concerned and this needs to be matched with the towing capability of the vehicle. After all, there is no point in buying a trailer that is too heavy for the vehicle to tow or so light that there is always the danger of it toppling over in the middle of the road.
Representatives at CARiD will introduce you to the different classes of Ford Freestar hitches segregated as per the weight that they can carry. Lowest amongst then is the Class 1 hitch and because it is meant to carry only lighter things, it is colloquially termed a lightweight hitch. While 2000 pounds is the maximum that anyone can load as regards Class 1 category, the figure rises to 3500 with a Class 2 hitch. Ford Freestar trailer hitches of Class 3 type are designed to carry up to 5000 pounds and those in Class 4 boast of a capacity of 12000 pounds. In each case, the weight bearing capacity of the tow bar varies as per the weight and it is usually ten percent of the total weight. Class 3 and Class 4 hitches have a much higher weight limit, but the vehicle’s weight capacity should still be the final determinant of how much weight you can carry on the trailer.
