Wave Goodbye to the Ford Crown Victoria

Production of the Ford Crown Victoria, which has been limited to fleet sales in the USA since 2008, will be discontinued in September 2011. In a little more that a year, Ford Motor Company will close the St. Thomas Assembly Plant where the car is manufactured, and discontinue the vehicle. When it happens, the Police Departments will lose the fast-accelerating sedan that it has depended on since 1992, and New York will lose the car that symbolized the full spectrum of the NYC life.

Prophecies of the Crown Vic's death have come and go. The car managed to survive in 2006 when the Blue Oval moved production from Michigan to Ontario, but this time there is no hope. Ford believes that sales will drop off in coming years as more states will require fleet vehicles meeting stricter environmental standards.

The Crown Victoria-based police interceptor will be replaced by an all-new Police Interceptor based on the Ford Taurus platform. As for the taxi cabs, New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission plans to pick a single van as the official bearer of the yellow and black. Ford offers its Transit Connect. Whether it wins or not, we'll find out later this year.
