For any off-road enthusiast, the name Dick Cepek is instantly recognizable. Right from the start, the brand was built for off-road enthusiasts and by an off-road enthusiast too! When Dick Cepek first started his eponymous brand in the 60’s, it was mainly so that he could supply his friends, family, and other fellow outdoorsmen and adventurers with what they needed to survive in harsh environments. Many of the products that Dick Cepek came up with were to cater to his own needs too!
Initially, the money was a non-factor and Dick Cepek didn't sell his wheels and tires with profit in mind. Instead, he was quite happy just to get by making enough to fuel his passion for adventuring. In 1963, he coined the phrase 'Baja Proven' after driving the 1,000 mile length of the Baja peninsula, which he regarded as the ultimate test for any product that he sold. In 1966, he returned to the Baja peninsula again and completed the stretch once more.
Unfortunately for Dick Cepek, the third time wasn't the charm and when he went back in 1967 – disaster struck. After a hurricane stopped Dick and forced him to stay in a foxhole till it passed, Dick Cepek decided it would be the last time he raced the event. However, not long after he opened his first real retail 'off-road' store and began selling wheels and tires along with everything associated with the off-road experience such as tents, auxiliary lights, and much more.
In just four short years, his brand was internationally acclaimed and began to sell in South Africa, Italy, the Middle East, and New Zealand. Two years after that, the brand had a wholesale division that was distributing to other retailers internationally and had even established a second retail location in El Cajon – the first of many other stores that would eventually be opened throughout the Southwest region of the USA and even go so far as to opening up in Japan in 1988.
My son loves his new rims on his truck. The entire package was complete and looked fantastic.
