The current generation of the Chevrolet Impala doesn’t offer a diesel engine, but its past iteration riding on the B-Body platform had it once. Diesel engines use compression ignition, i.e. they ignite the air/fuel mixture in the cylinders by greatly compressing air that naturally gets hotter as the pressure increases. That’s why these engines don’t need spark plugs, and the rest of the ignition system parts, too. So what is a glow plug? It transforms electricity into heat and continuously warms up the air coming into cylinders to mitigate one of the major weaknesses of the diesel design – a cold start procedure.

Preheated air in the cylinders allows for releasing more heat during compression and thus compensates the negative effect of cold cylinder walls absorbing energy. Faulty glow plugs quite simply won’t let you start the engine during cold months, which is why it’s important to maintain them in good operational condition.
