An expansion valve is located at the evaporator inlet. Its job is similar to the job of any other valve – namely, it controls the flow of liquid. In the case of the A/C system, it is the flow of refrigerant entering the evaporator. Orifice tubes are utilized in those systems that don’t employ expansion valves. They also control the amount of refrigerant coming to the evaporator. The main difference between these two parts is that orifice tubes just restrict refrigerant flow and can't regulate it. Therefore, on the vehicles that use orifice tubes there is a need for additional means of controlling the flow of refrigerant.
