When Ford introduced the Mustang in 1964, other car manufacturers couldn’t stand aside – each and every one of them wanted to have a pony car in their model line. Chevy came up with the Camaro two years later – in 1966. It was based on the compact Chevy Nova and shared components with its corporate sister, Pontiac’s Firebird. At its debut, the Chevy Camaro offered seven engine options to choose from, with a 3.8L I6 capable of 140 hp as standard. A host of transmission options was offered as well, including a 2-speed automatic and 3- and 4-speed manual. Though the Camaro has never been a flagship for Chevrolet, it is no doubt one of the most influential car models and an all-time rival to the ‘Stang.
