Over its long history, the BMW 3-Series has undergone several redesigns of the rear section, including the storage area. Today, all vehicles feature gas-charged trunk lift supports. They are safer and much more efficient than simple sticks used in the past. Gas charged lift supports are energy storage devices comprised of cylinders and movable rods. When the trunk is closed, the gas is compressed in the cylinder; when the trunk is open, the energy is released, and the trunk is held firmly and safely in open position. Unfortunately, lift supports tend to fail over time. If your trunk lid doesn’t stay open, it is time to replace trunk lift supports.
